Tripp Hutchinson
Councilor
Tripp Hutchinson is a born and raised Ketchum, Idaho local. Growing up, he received formal education from Hemingway Elementary, Community School, Wood River Middle, Desert Ridge Middle, Millennium High, Philips Academy Andover, Cheshire Academy and the University of Colorado Boulder. He also gained invaluable informal education from team sports, specifically hockey, for which he traveled around North America and lived as a “billet” with many different American families from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. These experiences constructed Tripp’s core political worldview of anti-authoritarianism, independent business, elected leadership and a strong working class being the bedrock of strong communities.
In 2023, at 25 years old, running on a fully articulated and prioritized local platform, Tripp was elected as the youngest City Councilman in the history of Ketchum. Tripp’s top priority for Ketchum is protecting and maintaining our unique community character, seeing it not only as crucial to the quality of life for current citizens but as a key economic differentiator decades in the future. As other ski towns in the west consolidate ownership, assimilate and sell their identities to outside interests, Ketchum citizens must forge their own path.
On council, Tripp has proposed legislation and set budget priorities for strict and fair zoning laws, robust public transportation, locals only deed restricted ownership and rental housing, commercial space designed for small business and community-centered town hall meetings. He has also advocated for stronger elected leadership to rebalance the accountability dynamic between electeds and the governmental administrative staff.
Tripp works as the Director of Programming for locally owned and independently operated Merlin’s Magic Lantern movie theater, bringing some of the highest and best art in the world directly to Ketchum every week. Tripp’s free time is spent playing sports, watching films, going to concerts and researching public transit, anti-trust law and housing. He supports Colorado Boulder Athletics, Boise State Athletics, and Liverpool Football Club.
