First Avenue Roadway Improvements Rescheduled Following Business Feedback

The City has updated the construction schedule for the upcoming First Avenue roadway improvement project following discussions with local business owners regarding concerns about timing.

In response to concerns about construction fatigue in the area, the City worked collaboratively with business owners to identify a revised construction schedule that reduces impacts while still allowing necessary infrastructure improvements to move forward.

WHAT:
Roadway improvement project, including a mill and overlay on First Avenue between the Sun Valley Road intersection and the 5th Street intersection.

WHEN:
Construction will now begin Sept. 8 (weather permitting) and is expected to take approximately three weeks.

PROJECT IMPACTS:

  • Full roadway closure of 1st Avenue between Sun Valley Road and 5th Street (the Sun Valley Road intersection will remain open, but the 4th and 5th Street intersections will be closed)
  • Parking in the construction area will not be available; temporary parking restrictions nearby on First Avenue and adjacent side streets may be in place.
  • Traffic control measures, including possible lane shifts and brief delays
  • Construction-related noise, dust, and activity during working hours
  • Short-term, coordinated access adjustments directly in front of properties as work progresses

Access to businesses and residences will remain open throughout the project, and sidewalks and alleyways will remain open; however, access may be temporarily redirected or managed by on-site crews

  • Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are encouraged to:
  • Follow posted signage and directions from traffic control personnel
  • Avoid parking in restricted areas during construction hours
  • Use caution when traveling through the work zone

This project is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to improve roadway conditions, enhance safety, and extend the life of local infrastructure along First Avenue. This section of First Avenue is reaching its end of life, and conducting the mill and overlay project now will help avoid the need to conduct a full rebuild of the roadway, which is much more invasive and costly.

The City appreciates the feedback, patience, and cooperation of local businesses and the public as this improvement project moves forward.
